Imperial War Museum

When I went to visit the Imperial War Museum I was impressed by the way everything is very organized. The museum shows objects, uniforms, models, videos and pictures of things related to the war and it explains it form different points of view like, for example, the children way of living during that time, the holocaust,the war in the west and in the east and so on. They use especially lots of videos and projections to make people understand better what they see.

This is a video that I have done in the gallery called "The children's war". What caught my attention in this gallery is that the normal exhibition space is integreated with a reconstruction of a typical house in Britain during wartime. To go there is necessary to start from the first floor, go through the gallery, go through the shelter and then go down the stairs that leads you into the house. It is not possible to do the journey the other way round,starting from the ground floor, because the house is accessible only from the first floor. In this way the designer made a path, a journey to follow to understand better the story of the war viewed by the children, but also to create a better circulation inside the house which is very narrow and if people were coming from both downstairs and upstairs it would create difficulties for the people to go through and continue their journey.

After looking at Micheal Gondry movie I thought to design a paper city myself. Above there are two pictures of the model that i am making which is going to be use for my stop motion animation; the shape of the houses is inspired by expressionist paintings as the director of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers'video"The other side" did.The main concept is the real and the virtual world; The model indeed represents a fake world that can only exist in the camera and can be alive only when moved by a person.At the moment I am still thinking about how can i connect it to the story of the group project and in the process of finishing it.

Escher drawings

Looking at these expressionist paintings I can easily understand how the director of Red Hot Chilli Peppers video used them to create the city ...the buildings have basically the same shape, very irregular and out of proportions, with lots of stairs(this is also taken from Escher drawings) and dark colors.

Otherside

This is the music video for the song Otherside by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The directors took inspiration from Escher and from Cubist and Expressionist paintings.
The final outcome is a video with a quite dark atmosphere where the characters are suspended in a surreal world. Very interesting the research and the fact that they looked at artistic movements to give a particular atmosphere to this video.

What I would like to achieve with this group project is a video that connects real life with a fake world. I would like my character to live in a sort of dream where things are slighlty distorted. Moreover, we never see thing as they are in our dream, but there is always something different...same thing I would like to happen in our movie. That's why I think this video could be an interesting inspiration.
